Malgudi days
I was looking for a book for my nephew. A book which he will love reading. A book from which he will learn something.
I browsed through the catalogue and found variery of books for young readers. Most of these were fantasy novels or fairytales. Most books were written by foreign authors. While browsing, I found the ideal book, "Malgudi days" by R K Narayan.
Just the cover brought back plethora of memories. I used to watch the series "Malgudi days" on TV. I was in school and this series used to be showcased on Sunday mornings. Each episode would be for 30 minutes including advertisements. It would include adventures and experiences of characters from a finctional town of Malgudi. The stories were believable and characters were relatable. Stories were short and simple, sometimes with serious undertones.
As the book arrived, I jumped on to reading it. I finished it, reminiscing my childhood days. I remembered the stories which I had watched on TV. Even after several years the stories are still relevant. The central idea of all stories is the virtue of human mind. Each character has unique skills and traits. Each story creates a beautiful picture of Malgudi and its residents. Each story touches upon a human aspect. Each story carries a whirlwind of emotions. Though, I feel the younger generation may not be able to relate to a few concepts (eg, a telegram). Still the essence of the stories remain unaltered.
Ultimately, Malgudi Days serves as a reminder that while the world around us may shift and modernize, the core of the human experience remains beautifully constant. This book is a sanctuary where every small life is granted its own narrative. The book leaves the reader with a lingering warmth and the comforting realization that there is a little bit of Malgudi’s timeless magic in every corner of our own lives.
