Easy sustainable changes

In the beginning of year 2024, I had decided that I will start living sustainably. Write from the beginning of this year. I started various ways by which I will adapt to sustainable living.

Based on what I read I started making some changes in my lifestyle. These are some of the changes which I made in my lifestyle which are proven to be sustainable habits.

1. I bought cotton handkerchief so that I can stop using paper towels on tissue papers.  As of today, I have completely stopped using paper towels. Now I only use the cotton handkerchief which is washable and reusable.

2. I had a lot of plastic bottles in my household. These plastic bottles were sustainable and reusible. However, I had given these plastic bottles for recycling.  I purchased steel bottles instead of cheap and fancy  looking plastic bottles. The stainless steel bottles are not only sustainable and reusable,  they are also long-lasting. They will not contribute to micro plastics.

3. I have stopped buying from fast fashion stores. I learned that fast fashion industry contributes to a lot of pollution in the sea and it also leads to landfills. This is why I have stopped buying from fast fashion stores. So my contribution to landfills and pollution to the sea would get minimised.

4. I have stopped buying artificial manmade fibres such as polyester and gorgette. Polyester and gorgette fabrics are made from artificial fibres essentially various variants of plastic.  When we wash these artificial fabrics, they leach out microplastics. By limiting the use of polyester and Georgie. I have tried to minimise my contribution to microphones.

5. Whenever I am purchasing clothes, I ensure that I am purchasing only natural fibres. Natural fibres such as cotton and silk are widely produced in my country. These fibres are affordable in my country and are also easily available. I am purchasing only these fibres, because these are sustainable, long-lasting, they look elegant and also they are locally made.

6. I have restricted my purchases in this year. I had decided that I will purchase only one article in a month. That article could be a top wear,  a bottom wear, or a fashion accessory. This is how I have been focusing on quality instead of quantity.

7. I have focused on creating my capsule wardrobe. I had been trying to create my capsule. Wardrobe, for almost 5 to 6 years now. This year I have decided that towards the end of 2024. My capsule wardrobe would be ready, though it may not be possible to create.  My capsule wardrobe by the end of this year. I am certain that almost 80% of my wardrobe would be closer to making a minimalistic wardrobe.

8. I have stopped buying festive wear clothes which can be worn only a couple of times during the year.

9. I earlier had denims at least in 3 colors or fits. During last few years, I had donated the old denims. Now I have only 1 pair. I do not intend to buy an additional pair.

10. This year when I bought a pair of jeans, I bought a classic style which is not on trend but will also not go out of style. I specifically purchased a dark colored pair after learning that light washed denims consume a lot of water during the manufacturing process as compared with the dark colored pair.

These changes were easy to implement and are effective. In 2025, I plan to find more ways for sustainable living.

Opinion: Upstaging the bride

Wedding season is about to begin. In the event of enthusiasm and glamour, nowadays I am seeing various social media posts featuring the bride, groom, and the whole ceremony. While most of these are wholesome posts, I am seeing a plethora of disheartening posts. Not only the social media posts but I have heard stories from friends and colleagues about how a specific guest was trying to upstage the bride. These posts/stories specifically discuss the following, where the bride is upset because: a wedding guest is wearing their own wedding outfits a wedding guest is wearing the outfit in the same colour or similar to that of the bride a wedding guest is wearing a bright colour which is drawing the attention away from the bride a wedding guest is prettier than the bride a wedding guest is wearing a designer outfits or a designer inspired outfit Most of these outfits could be inappropriate for the western weddings. In western weddings, most of the brides are dressed in white...

Book review: The Brahmastra unleashed

The book " The Brahmastra Unleashed " it's written by D Sivanandhan who is the former police commissioner of Mumbai and former Director General of Police Maharashtra. This book is a first person account of how the Mumbai underworld was destroyed by the Mumbai Police. As someone who is born in 1980 and grew up in 1990s in Mumbai, I am very well aware of the underworld situation in Mumbai back then. In 1990s Underworld was not exactly hidden. The underworld was not in the background, rather was "the main character" of Mumbai. One was not required to search for the underworld, rather the underworld would come chasing someone at their own doorstep. Traces of Underworld could be found in any lane, any road, any corner, any shop, or any building - practically everywhere. Everyday some or the other person would come face to face with the underworld activities. No one would know when they would witness an underworld activity that could lead to their apparent...

Haunted: The burning woman

All my life, I have heard ghost stories in my school, colleges, and offices. Rather it is safe to say that my school, colleges, and all workplaces were haunted. All stories I heard were the first person accounts.  This story is from one of my workplaces. This story is not for the faint hearted. The story of the burning woman. I had joined a new company. I was in my induction and probation days. As I was new, I was following the "standard rules" such as lay low, follow the orders of superiors, complete the work before the deadline, and avoid old colleagues' gossips.  It was one fine evening, around 6:45 PM I was still in the office. The official log off time was 5 PM, however I was waiting for my boss to tell me to leave (yes, I was that type of employee). Additionally, I had a deliverable with me for completion. Most staff members had already left. In an office of around 150 people capacity, only 6-7 people remained including me. A few seats across sat a senio...
