Paranormal entities manifest their presence in various visual ways - a sudden thick mist, a shadow moving against the light, or a fleeting glimpse in a reflective surface. What Sanjay (pseudonym) saw in the mirror changed his belief. This is Sanjay's story.
Raised in the busy metropolis Sanjay had move to a quiet town for his job. Though Sanjay had been enjoying the new peaceful life, he often missed the vibrant energy of city life. This town did not have many multiplex theatres or malls. What the town lacked in the modern entertainment it more than made up for in the scenic beauty. As an avid nature lover, Sanjay spent his free time exploring its serene lakes and tranquil riversides, slowly falling in love with his new surroundings.
Driving to the lake after dinner had become Sanjay’s favourite night routine. He would park by the water and go for a peaceful stroll along the shore, using the time to unwind, soak in the crisp air, and get some light exercise. It was a comforting evening ritual that made the quiet town feel like home—until one night changed everything.
One evening around eleven, Sanjay had returned from his usual late-night walk. The next day, an elderly neighbour warned him to avoid the shore so late at night. The man offered no explanation, leaving Sanjay to assume it was merely a safety precaution—the path was poorly lit, making an accidental fall into the dark water an easy mistake. Sanjay brushed the vague warning aside without asking for details.
It was a dull weekend when Sanjay was really bored at his home. It was around midnight. Seeking his usual escape, he drove to the lake, parked in his usual spot, and set off into the dark. He noticed that a young couple was sitting at a bench, staring into the lake. He thought to himself that the pair had found the lake to be a romantic escape at night. He continued walking. Few minutes later he returned, he saw that they sat unnaturally still, frozen like statues, completely unbothered by the pitch-black surroundings. Sanjay found that to be unusual. He decided to ignore and kept moving.
Sanjay eventually sat down on a different bench further along the shore, where the couple was no longer in view. Finally, around 1 Sanjay decided to return home. He walked back to his car and started the ignition. He took a glance at the bench, only to notice that the couple was gone. He headed straight to his home and started driving. While driving he looked in the rearview mirror. What he saw froze the blood in his veins. Sitting side by side in his backseat, perfectly still as if they belonged there, were the man and woman from the lake. He hit the brakes and turned around. To his surprise, the back seat was empty. He looked back in the mirror and saw that there was nobody. The ones accompanying him in the car were his racing heart, shallow breath, and cold sweat. Sanjay was terrified. He knew that he had not been hallucinating - what he had seen was real. Shaken to his core, he drove straight home, locked his doors, and turned on a comedy show just to drown out the silence.
Next morning Sanjay approached his neighbour to uncover the truth. He describe his encounter with the couple and asked the elderly friend for an explanation. The neighbour revealed the truth that shocked Sanjay, "it happened several years ago. A young couple wanted to get married but families were against it. They decided to elope but somehow the families stopped them. After multiple failed attempts, they decided to end their life together. They were reunited in their death at the lake. Ever since then at multiple instances they were seen, sitting at the bench. They do not harm anybody but they only want their story to be remembered. This is why I was telling you not to visit the lake at night."
The truth brought Sanjay a sense of clarity. What he had witnessed wasn't a trick of his mind, but the haunting echo of an unfinished saga of love. It served as a silent, powerful reminder: life may end, but true love endures long after the physical body is gone.
