Haunted: Stepmother's mistake

I have met many unfortunate people who lost their mothers in their childhood. Their childhood was grief sickened. Either they were raised by their relatives (like aunts and grandparents) or their father remarried and the stepmother became the female figure in their lives. Experiences with the stepmothers were mixed, mostly positive, excluding one particularly spooky.

This is a real life story narrated by a colleague, Seema (pseudonym for protecting the confidentiality). This is the first person encounter of Seema's stepmother.

Seema was 3 years old when her mother died after an acute illness. Seema had an elder sister who was 6 years old back then. Their grandparents were elderly and frail, while their other relatives stayed in different cities. After evaluating all options, Seema's dad decided to remarry, so that the stepmother would take care of the daughters.

As described by Seema, their stepmother was cordial. She would take care of them very well. She was loving and caring. Seema and her sister had welcomed their stepmother with open arms, though they always had their mother in their memories. Their stepmother also never tried to erase the memories of their biological mother.

Seema was 5 years old when a mishap happened. Seema broke a mug while keeping it at the sink. Their stepmother who otherwise was calm lost her temper. She began scolding Seema over this mishap and Seema started crying. This angered Seema's elder sister and she stepped in to speak for her younger sister. Seema's sister calmly informed the stepmother that it was a mistake and was unintentional. However, the scolding continued. Seema's sister was in her protective mode and started arguing with their stepmother. In this argument, their stepmother slapped Seema's sister.

A few moments later, their stepmother placed her hand at her own throat, as if she was trying to loosen the noose. Her throat turned red and then purple. She gasped for breath. Girls were scared and clueless. This went on for a couple of minutes and stopped suddenly. Their stepmother was panting. Slowly her breathing became normal and she went back to her room without speaking a word to the girls. That night the family dined without much exchange of words.

Next morning Seema overheard her stepmother. She was telling their dad what happened the previous day and the subsequent night. The stepmother said that after she slapped the elder daughter, she felt that someone had a chokehold on her. She was unable to breathe and showed the bruises on her neck to their dad. What she said next was scary. The stepmother continued that she had a nightmare that night. She saw the girls' diseased mother. The mother was furious. The mother told the stepmother that she had choked the stepmother earlier that day. The mother warned that if the stepmother ever touched her daughters again, it will be the stepmother's last day on earth. Chills ran down Seema's spine. Seema told the whole tale to her sister. Both sisters decided never to discuss this again.

Their life was never the same after this incident. The home was quieter. Conversations became shorter. Their father would discuss only the essential topics such as school, studies, and performance. Their stepmother would speak only if it was necessary. She would not raise her voice. She did not even know that Seema was aware of the whole ordeal. She remained cordial and somewhat in fear till her death. Seema or her sister never felt any sinister presence in their childhood home. Yet they knew, it was their safe space. They will always be protected.

In the end, a mother never truly leaves; she simply changes form, evolving from a physical presence into an eternal, watchful legacy that ensures her daughters are always protected. Events like these prove this theory.

Opinion: Upstaging the bride

Wedding season is about to begin. In the event of enthusiasm and glamour, nowadays I am seeing various social media posts featuring the bride, groom, and the whole ceremony. While most of these are wholesome posts, I am seeing a plethora of disheartening posts. Not only the social media posts but I have heard stories from friends and colleagues about how a specific guest was trying to upstage the bride. These posts/stories specifically discuss the following, where the bride is upset because: a wedding guest is wearing their own wedding outfits a wedding guest is wearing the outfit in the same colour or similar to that of the bride a wedding guest is wearing a bright colour which is drawing the attention away from the bride a wedding guest is prettier than the bride a wedding guest is wearing a designer outfits or a designer inspired outfit Most of these outfits could be inappropriate for the western weddings. In western weddings, most of the brides are dressed in white...

Book review: The Brahmastra unleashed

The book " The Brahmastra Unleashed " it's written by D Sivanandhan who is the former police commissioner of Mumbai and former Director General of Police Maharashtra. This book is a first person account of how the Mumbai underworld was destroyed by the Mumbai Police. As someone who is born in 1980 and grew up in 1990s in Mumbai, I am very well aware of the underworld situation in Mumbai back then. In 1990s Underworld was not exactly hidden. The underworld was not in the background, rather was "the main character" of Mumbai. One was not required to search for the underworld, rather the underworld would come chasing someone at their own doorstep. Traces of Underworld could be found in any lane, any road, any corner, any shop, or any building - practically everywhere. Everyday some or the other person would come face to face with the underworld activities. No one would know when they would witness an underworld activity that could lead to their apparent...

Haunted: The burning woman

All my life, I have heard ghost stories in my school, colleges, and offices. Rather it is safe to say that my school, colleges, and all workplaces were haunted. All stories I heard were the first person accounts.  This story is from one of my workplaces. This story is not for the faint hearted. The story of the burning woman. I had joined a new company. I was in my induction and probation days. As I was new, I was following the "standard rules" such as lay low, follow the orders of superiors, complete the work before the deadline, and avoid old colleagues' gossips.  It was one fine evening, around 6:45 PM I was still in the office. The official log off time was 5 PM, however I was waiting for my boss to tell me to leave (yes, I was that type of employee). Additionally, I had a deliverable with me for completion. Most staff members had already left. In an office of around 150 people capacity, only 6-7 people remained including me. A few seats across sat a senio...
