Social media is vile

Social media is evil. There, I said it. I mean it. I will prove it.

In last 15 years, we have seen a rise of social media platforms. At first it was an innocent platform like Orkut, where you can make friends and write something nice to them on their profile.

Then came Facebook. Initially it was about connecting with your old friends and creating new friends. It was easy to connect with your old friends who were far away. It was free. We can easily stay connected with our distant friends via the Facebook using the internet. Also we can create new friends even without meeting them in person. It was a cool and a creative idea to bring the world closer and together.

Along came Twitter (now known as X). This platform was used moreover for voicing the opinion. It had character limitation so you can maximum put your feelings in a sentence. Later, there were many enhancements to this platform leading to improving the character limitation and addition of media like photos or videos. However it still remained a platform where the opinions were stated.

Then came platforms like Instagram. Initially Instagram was used mainly by photographers, National Geographic channel or Discovery. It was mainly about posting the pictures. We can post pictures on Instagram and we can get inspired from others work.

Later came vicious platforms like Snapchat and Tiktok. These platforms opened a new world for the artists. Using these platform various singers, dancers, artist, or actors created short videos lasting from 10 seconds to 50 seconds. This videos showed the snippet of their artistry (so called). Snapchat and and TikTok took the world by a storm. Majority of young generation wanted to move to these platforms. Other platforms started lagging behind and they joined the race with these platforms. They introduced the same features with Snapchat and TikTok had allowing the content creators to create short videos there as well.

Along with widening of social media platforms came the evil part of them. People started commenting on various post and started bullying. The bullying was not only limited to the content creator but also to other people who were commenting on the posts. Several content creators were highly disappointed because of the responses they were receiving on their posts.

But this was not the end of it. Platforms where you can voice your opinion or state the facts can also be used for misinformation and disinformation. People voice their opinion and started calling it a fact because it was documented on social media. Content creators realised their power and decided to misuse it. Various creators engaged in promoting hate speech against a political party, public figure, or a specific community. The blind followers of such content creators became equally hateful. Many followers blindly trusted their favourite content creator and lead several violent activities unnecessarily. Young generation just started blindly following their influencer and they ignored facts. Several people had the mindset that if their favourite influencer is saying something, then it is right. Their word is the final word.

Several protests and violences that occurred in last few years I will completely attribute them to the hateful social media. If such hateful social media remains in the society we are doomed.

I also use various social media platforms. Having said that when I will feel that social media is now the work of demon, I will leave all the platforms at that very moment. This is a promise.

Opinion: Upstaging the bride

Wedding season is about to begin. In the event of enthusiasm and glamour, nowadays I am seeing various social media posts featuring the bride, groom, and the whole ceremony. While most of these are wholesome posts, I am seeing a plethora of disheartening posts. Not only the social media posts but I have heard stories from friends and colleagues about how a specific guest was trying to upstage the bride. These posts/stories specifically discuss the following, where the bride is upset because: a wedding guest is wearing their own wedding outfits a wedding guest is wearing the outfit in the same colour or similar to that of the bride a wedding guest is wearing a bright colour which is drawing the attention away from the bride a wedding guest is prettier than the bride a wedding guest is wearing a designer outfits or a designer inspired outfit Most of these outfits could be inappropriate for the western weddings. In western weddings, most of the brides are dressed in white...

Book review: The Brahmastra unleashed

The book " The Brahmastra Unleashed " it's written by D Sivanandhan who is the former police commissioner of Mumbai and former Director General of Police Maharashtra. This book is a first person account of how the Mumbai underworld was destroyed by the Mumbai Police. As someone who is born in 1980 and grew up in 1990s in Mumbai, I am very well aware of the underworld situation in Mumbai back then. In 1990s Underworld was not exactly hidden. The underworld was not in the background, rather was "the main character" of Mumbai. One was not required to search for the underworld, rather the underworld would come chasing someone at their own doorstep. Traces of Underworld could be found in any lane, any road, any corner, any shop, or any building - practically everywhere. Everyday some or the other person would come face to face with the underworld activities. No one would know when they would witness an underworld activity that could lead to their apparent...

Haunted: The burning woman

All my life, I have heard ghost stories in my school, colleges, and offices. Rather it is safe to say that my school, colleges, and all workplaces were haunted. All stories I heard were the first person accounts.  This story is from one of my workplaces. This story is not for the faint hearted. The story of the burning woman. I had joined a new company. I was in my induction and probation days. As I was new, I was following the "standard rules" such as lay low, follow the orders of superiors, complete the work before the deadline, and avoid old colleagues' gossips.  It was one fine evening, around 6:45 PM I was still in the office. The official log off time was 5 PM, however I was waiting for my boss to tell me to leave (yes, I was that type of employee). Additionally, I had a deliverable with me for completion. Most staff members had already left. In an office of around 150 people capacity, only 6-7 people remained including me. A few seats across sat a senio...
